Deaf Awareness

The Deaf Awareness Training provided by Suvai Deaf East Community aims to educate individuals and organisations on how to support and communicate with the Deaf community effectively. The training is designed to bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing individuals by increasing their understanding of Deaf culture, communication needs, and the barriers faced by the Deaf population.

Key Areas Covered:

1. Understanding Deaf Culture:

- The training offers insights into the values, tradition and social norms within the Deaf community.

2. Communication Techniques:

- Participants learn basic British Sign Language (BSL) phrases and alternative communication methods (e.g. lip-reading and facial expressions).

- Emphasis on creating accessible environments for Deaf people, such as using visual aids and clear speech.

3. Barriers Faced by the Deaf Community:

- The training highlights the everyday challenges encountered by the Deaf community such as accessing information, social interactions and the need for improved accessibility.

4. Promoting Inclusivity:

- The training promotes a more inclusive society by educating participants on how to adapt their behaviour to ensure Deaf individuals feel included and respected.

By equipping participants with Deaf awareness, Suvai Deaf East Community’s training helps create a more accessible and Deaf-friendly society.

This training is especially beneficial for businesses, public services, schools and anyone else interacting with Deaf individuals on a day-to-day basis.
